Paolo (Alberto Sordi), a 36-year-old from Rome, always tells everyone who doesn't want to hear that he is a confirmed bachelor. He even expresses his condolences to his best friend at whose wedding he is the best man. After an affair with a stewardess, he goes to live with his mother in the country; she senses the loneliness and lack of independence behind his words and tries to set him up. Carla, a client’s daughter, is also not impressed by Paolo's big-talking facade and counters his macho behavior with confidence. Even though Alberto Sordi plays the comical role of a hypochondriac and commitment-phobic show-off, LO SCAPOLO is a comedy with melancholy undertones, whose happy ending cannot be entirely trusted.
